Fix Your Eyes On Jesus
there is hope for what you really want
ICE BREAKER (start here)
When was the first time you remember really wanting something or someone? What (or whom) did you want? Did you receive your desire?
intro (read aloud before the discussion)
God has placed deep desires in our hearts. Let’s call them wants. He wants us to have the true desires of our heart. David knew that and wrote about it in Psalm 37:4. We often give up on those wants, but Jesus died and was raised from the dead, so there is hope for what you really want
SERMON DISCUSSION (Use as a guide for dialogue, let God lead, and read the verses aloud)
Do you believe that God really wants to give you what you really really want (the true desires of your heart)? Why do you feel the way you do?
WHAT do you really really want? There may be a few things. WHOM do you really really want? What have you been called to? What or who stirs you?
Read John 21:2-3. For Peter, this is a moment of moving backward–walking away from what he really really wants. He has failed in going after what he really wants. How can you relate? How have you walked away or settled?
Read John 21:4-5. Jesus is right there, although not recognized. He is working and calling us forward all the time. How is Jesus currently working, even as you are giving up in some way or another when it comes to what you really really want?
Read John 21:6. The miraculous catch. This scene mirrors an event that had happened three years prior, when Peter first met Jesus, and Jesus called out Peter’s deep desires. Jesus is calling Peter to remember what he truly wants. How are you being called to remember?
Read John 21:7. This is the moment: going after Jesus and, therefore, going after the desires that he has placed in our hearts. What would it look like (specifically and practically) for you to go after what or whom you really really want right now?
What is the ONE thing that might be stopping you from moving forward, jumping in the water, taking the red pill, entering the wardrobe – going after what you really really want?
MINISTRY TIME (Invite the Spirit of God to come – “Come Holy Spirit”)
Share what you feel that you need from God in order to move forward, to pursue, or to pursue again what you really truly want. Is it boldness, patience, forgiveness, strength, vulnerability, repentance? Ask for prayer for that gift from God.
SPIRITUAL FORMATION (This is a weekly practice as we seek to become more like Jesus)
In some ways, the spiritual journey is a journey of desire. Sometimes we have understood spiritual formation as a killing of desire, but in its pure form, growing spiritually is a process of discovering our true self, made in God’s image and created with unique desires that reflect His goodness. As a formation practice this week, meditate daily on the God who gave you your true desires and wants to give you the desires of your heart, and write them down so that you can look back on them in the coming days.
