Fix Your Eyes On Jesus

WEEK 5

Signs of the times

ICE BREAKER (start here)

Do you tend to be a future oriented, past oriented or “in the present” oriented kind of person? Why do you think that is the case?

intro (read aloud before the discussion)

We interrupt our previously scheduled resurrection story message to bring you an urgent message about the “signs of the times”. Things are crazy right now. Is the return of Jesus upon us, are there signs, is he right at the door? Let’s talk about this urgent topic!

SERMON DISCUSSION (Use as a guide for dialogue, let God lead, and read the verses aloud)

Read Mark 13:26-27. The New Testament is full of verses like this one. “Behold he comes!” The visible triumphant return of the resurrected Jesus. Do you think much about the second coming? Do people think much about the second coming? Why or why not?

Read Mark 13:5-9. Jesus does give signs. Count them up – there are six noted here and another noted later in the text. So, if we have the signs, we can predict! Use these signs right now to try to predict the timing of the second coming. It’s difficult, right? Why?

Read Mark 13:29, 32-33. These signs (that are constant) say that the coming is upon us! Yet, because these signs are constant, nobody can know the day or the hour of the return of Jesus. So, we must always be ready!

This is the main point and the main question: What does it look like to be on guard, to be alert… to be READY? Talk about what you think it looks like to be ready always.

Read Luke 21:24-36. When explaining what it looks like to be ready, Jesus talked about the concept of character, taking sin seriously, and practicing his kind of life. If you were to ask Jesus this direct question, “What does it look like to be ready?” What do you think his answer would be?

Read Matthew 11:28-30. What would it look like practically and specifically for you to be ready? What might you want to change right now? Who might you want to pursue? What might you want to add to your life? As we say yes to his yoke, what might begin to change in our lives?

MINISTRY TIME (Invite the Spirit of God to come – “Come Holy Spirit”)

Share what you need to put down or pick up. Maybe it’s time to repent. In the presence of Jesus, be grateful that because of the cross and the resurrection we are forgiven and released into new life. He, by his spirit, is making us ready for his arrival. Pray for each other.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION (This is a weekly practice as we seek to become more like Jesus)

Spiritual formation is becoming like Jesus. It is by his power and his grace alone. However, spiritual formation is also seeking, with everything that we have, with all the energy that we can muster, with every fiber of our being, to become (by the power of the spirit) like Jesus. Set out with that aim today and this week, and make a list of a few practices that might help you as disciples in this process.
