Casting crowns

WEEK 1

ICEBREAKER

Are you more of a cat or a dog person? (It’s okay to be neither!) Why?

Intro

We are beginning our advent series. Advent is the first season of the church year. Advent is about God’s arrival–his presence. In this series, we will be focusing on the only appropriate response to the presence or arrival of God: worship.

sermon discussion

If you grew up in a religious community, what was the worship like? What was the style of worship that you remember early on in your journey? What do you remember thinking about it? When was the first time that you remember engaging or participating in worship? Was it scary or challenging? Was it embarrassing? Was it exhilarating and natural? Explain your experience. Read verses 2-3. God on his throne is the center of everything. We often want to make ourselves and our lives the center. Have you ever experienced the act of worship bringing you back to center at a time or moment when you needed to be re-centered? Share about it.

Read verses 4-6. Talk about this scene. What stands out to you? What words would you use to describe the throne room? What kind of emotion does this picture bring up in you? Read verses 10-11. The 24 elders probably represent Christians throughout the centuries. The point is that worship is (first and foremost) what it means to be regenerated humans. We were created to praise God, so worship is our most important activity. Do you agree? If so, why must worship be the first and most-important human activity? Travis told the story of “getting the weights out of his hands” as he talked about his journey of worship. What is God doing right now in your journey of worship? What is he saying to you? What is he calling you in to?

ministry time

Do you find any barrier or diculty or fear or frustration when it comes to worship? Share about that, and ask that God would speak and move in the midst of that struggle.

spiritual formation

Weekly worship in community was possibly the very first Christian practice or discipline. When the early church discovered that Jesus had risen from the dead on Sunday morning, they began to meet for corporate praise and worship. The spiritual practice of weekly worship isn’t about regular attendance but about the kind of formation that can only happen as we submit ourselves to God in regular worship. In your life, is the first day of the week devoted to worshiping the one who sits on the throne?
